Orava
Orava is a beautiful region, teeming
with history and surrounded by
spectacular scenary. It is believed to have been inhabited as
early as the Primeval Age, with archilogical findings originating
from the Late Stone Age and from the Early Bronze Age.
The splendid Orava Castle was built in about
1250, but was much smaller then that the sight that greets you
today. The upper castle stands on 112m of limestone cliff, with
the ground floor built of stone, and the upper floors constructed
out of wood.
Orava is home to Oravice, a thermal
baths and also Zuberec, an open air museum of traditional life
in Slovakia. There is also a man made lake, Oravska Priehrada,
where you can do all water sports or simply sunbathe on the beaches
surrounding it. You can also visit Slanica Island in the middle
of the lake, which is home to a museum and a church.
