High Tatras
The High Tatras is an area of natural
beauty in northern Slovakia, which boasts the smallest high mountain
range in the world. Slovakia's most popular tourist region, the
High Tatras is a veritable paradise for hikers in the summer season
and for winter sports enthusiasts during the ski season.
In
1949, the High Tatras became the first Slovak National Park (
TANAP). The characteristic peaks of the High Tatras, such as Gerlachovský
Peak, Kriván, Rysy and Lomnický Peak, were formed
by glacier activity almost 2 million years ago.
Visitors to the High Tatras have
a wide choice of accommodation and restaurants in the many villages
that are dotted throughout the mountain range. It is possible
to visit the likes of Strbske Pleso (with it's beautiful mountain
lake), Stary Smokovec (the largest settlement in the Tatras) and
Tatranska Lomnica (with it's cable car up to Lomnisky Stit - the
second highest peak in the mountain range) by travelling on an
electric railway.
