The next in the series of the witches' days was St. Ondrej's (30th of November). This day was especially for the girls, who got up to mischief, played practical jokes and had parties.
This day was also full of different prophecies about getting married. The girls would go around the houses of their boyfriends stealing wood, which they would afterwards use for heating the stoves on which they would cook dumplings.
Each girl cooked her dumplings in a separate pot, and in each of the dumplings was placed a little note with a boy's name written on it. Whichever dumpling first floated to the top of the pot was the decisive one, and the girl was supposed to marry the boy whose name was hidden in that dumpling.
One of the superstitious practices on this day was the pouring of the lead. This involved the girls pouring molten lead into cold water, and from the shapes that the solid lead formed they would predict their future, or the job of their future husband.
Another tradition on St. Ondrej's day was the shaking of the fences. Girls (sometimes even boys) would shake the fence of a farmhouse into which she wanted to marry and say, "I am shaking the fence, nobody knows about it, only the God alone from Heaven, that I need a husband."
Elsewhere, the girls were knocking on the pigsties and asked, "How many years will pass until I get married?" They would knock slowly and count the number of knocks until they heard a noise from the pigs. The total number of knocks they counted would represent the number of years until they would get married.
On Ondrej's Day the boys would also get up to mischief. They would dress up as beggars and go around the different houses teasing the girls.
For example they would say thing such as, "Girls and young women, do you want to know if you will get married in the coming year? Then try this tested trick. On St. Ondrej's day, break off a branch from a cherry tree and plant it in some sand. Every day you must water the branch, but I warn you that you must carry the water in your mouth. If the cherry comes into blossom by Christmas, then you will be a bride within a year's time."
