History of Slovakia

Slovakia's history is one of the most interesting in all of Europe, though it remains relatively unknown in the Western world. Ever since the Slavs were invaded by the Magyars, over one thousand years ago, Slovakia has struggled to be recognized as a nation state.

This section of the Slovakia - Heart of Europe web site serves as a guide to Slovakia's history, with a brief description of key events that have taken place over the last millennium.

SHoE's History of Slovakia is not intended to be a rich historical work, it is more of an overview of the country's past. We recommend students who are studying this period, or those of you who would like a more in-depth account, to purchase:

"A History of Slovakia - The Struggle For Survival" by Stanislav J. Kirschbaum.

Please note that we have reviewed this excellent book in the review section of the site.
