Born in Uhrovec, Western Slovakia, in 1815, Ludovit Stur is best known for his development of the Slovak language. From 1851 onwards, the central Slovak dialect was used for the literary language of Slovakia, which forms the basis of modern Slovak. Stur's life, although short was very productive. As well as his involvement with the Slovak language, he was also a political leader and the cofounder of the pro-Slovak culture Tatrin Society.
Tragically, Stur's life was cut short on the 12th January 1856, when he died as the result of a hunting accident.
