Famous Slovaks: Milan Ratislav Stefanik
Milan Ratislav Stefanik was an astronomer, a scientist, a politician and a general in the French Army. This amazing man was born in Slovakia, in a village called Kosariska, in the region of Nitra.
Stefanik was educated outside of Slovakia, and although he rose to the heights of a general in the French Army, he never forgot his homeland. Indeed, he played a big part in Slovakia gaining its independence from Hungary, and the formation of the Czecho-Slovak Republic after WWI.

Unfortunately, Stefanik was not able to play the big part he was destined to have in the new Czechoslovak Republic. He tragically died in a plane crash near Bratislava, in 1919.
