Chapter 1: Krivan, Poprad
and Spisska Sobota
Don't get me wrong, it's not that I particularly dislike Poprad;
I suppose I just expected more
a whole lot more. When your
town is situated at the foot of one of the most spectacular natural
phenomenon in Europe, and indeed you market your town as 'The Gateway
to the Tatras', you wouldn't expect
well let's just say you
wouldn't expect Poprad. Perhaps I am being a little harsh on Poprad,
but let's just say we didn't exactly hit it off from the word go.
Having arrived in Poprad and parked the car near the town square;
we headed off for the hotel district, about a ten-minute walk from
the center, in order to find a place to spend the night. You see
we hadn't bothered to reserve any hotels, as it was not the high
season, and also because we wanted to find out what were the best
deals, when we got to a particular town.
Of course, if there happens to be a National Doctor's Conference
in a town, which has about six hotels to its name, it doesn't matter
whether it's high season or not. Everywhere we tried was fully booked.
We went from hotel to hotel, stepping down in class as we went,
but at each we got the same response - no room at the inn. What
it did give us, however, was a chance to view all the hotels that
Poprad had to offer.
