Chapter 1: Krivan, Poprad
and Spisska Sobota
The results came as a bit of a shock to both camps, as it turned
out that Gerlachovsky stit, at 2,654 meters, was in fact the highest
peak. However, the Spis locals did get some satisfaction with the
fact that at 2,634 meters, Lomnicky stit was an incredible 140 meters
higher than its rival.
Although it may not be the highest of the Tatras Mountains, there
is little doubt that it is the most intriguing. "Krivan"
means "curved" in the Slovak language and there is a wonderful
legend behind how the mountain got its unusual shape. The story
goes thus:
When God created the earth he was generally pleased with what he
had achieved, but he decided that he would add some more beauty
to various places, all around the world. So he sent forth his angels
into the world with an enormous sack, which held this beauty within,
with orders to distribute the contents evenly throughout the lands.
However, as the angels passed over one particular mountain, they
misjudged its height, and the sack was torn on its peak.
