Chapter 1: Krivan, Poprad
and Spisska Sobota
Shading my eyes from the bright sunlight, I peered ahead at the
horizon. Towering over a forest of fir trees, pale gray mountains
rose up majestically, piercing the deep blue sky above. Most striking
of all was the peak of Mount Krivan, who's unusual shape caught
my eye as I enjoyed my first glimpse of the High Tatras.
"Ria! You can see why it's called the curved mountain!"
I called out to my wife, who had crossed over to the other side
of the road, so that the passing cars would not spoil the photos
that she was taking.
"It's beautiful, isn't it!" she called back, as she tried
again to capture the view on our digital camera.
We were parked in a lay-by on the E50 road, a chance to stretch
our legs and to take in our surroundings. We were heading for Poprad,
the so-called 'Gateway to the Tatras', and the first port of call
on our Tour around Slovakia. We were now about a twenty minute drive
from Poprad, and this would be as close as we'd get to the High
Tatras for the time being, as we planned to go East from there,
and explore Eastern Slovakia.
